WEEKLY LISTENING - Week 3

Why you should define your fears instead of your goals | Tim Ferriss

Timothy Ferris is an American science writer and the best-selling author of twelve books. He is an entrepreneur, author, and podcaster.
He begins the tedtalk by sharing his experience and story of depression. After going through so much in his life, he finally figured out a way to avoid self destruction, and the recipe is called stoicism. Stoicism is a school of Hellenistic philosophy which was founded by Zeno of Citium, in Athens, in the early 3rd century BC. Stoicism is a philosophy of personal ethics informed by its system of logic and its views on the natural world. It reminds us life is short and unpredictable; you never know what's next and what life has to offer. We need to learn to separate what we can control from what we cannot.

We suffer more often in the imagination than the reality” – SENECA

Timothy shares this simple yet powerful exercise called "fear setting" which is to write our fears down.

This process consists of three pages
What if I?
Define: it contains all the worst things you can imagine
prevent: what can you do to prevent worst things from happen
Repair: if the worst things happen how you can repair the damage

What might be the benefits of an attempt or a partial success?
Here he suggests us to think about the development of emotional and financial skills and benefits and confidence that we would get by attempting a certain thing or task.

The Cost of Inaction
